Nato - let's start the discusion!

A Russian senior councilor at the embassy in Helsinki, on the possibility on Finland joining Nato:
"We're just asking you to be rational and think many many times before you do any decisions" He also mentioned that it would be a military threath to us if we'd join Nato. Interesting.

Putins point of view is clear according to the Finnish minstery of foreign affairs (Mtv 3, uutiset); Russia is against enlargening of Nato. However President Halonen claims that Nato was not an issue when she visited Putin last week.
Finland is right now preparing in the government a report on the defens- and security policies that will be discussed in the parliament later, next year. The question is, is Russia trying to impact on the report - because it will also contain the results of a research on potential finish Nato membership. The interesting part is, that not really anyone is talking about this... Is it because it is considered not to really have any impact (not being any person of importance saying these things) or is it in deed to show Russia that "we don't care what statements they make

Interesting with elections in many cointroes right in; among others in Poland and Switzerland. In todays HBL the conservative's campagne was critised for beeing rasistic and provocative... Good luck to our fellow liberals in both coutries! :)

Hejsan Minna,

Embassy of Russian Federation and the officials confirmed Halonen's views to be right today and informed that Mr. Kozin's views very absolutely only his personal and did not represent the stand of Russia.

It is anyway an longshot what our leftish parties has represented that Russia would be offended by Finland joining Nato. It did not really seem as an action to have influenced the relations with the Baltic states when they did.

I had this feeling yesterday when reading those that either they're really upset about it (what I do not believe at all) or somebody is wanting to influence our policy through the old relations. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

Well, now we know that Russia don't care, so lets start drafting the agreement, right ;)
