russia and agriculture

Wtf is really going on in Russia? now they have not given visas for MEP's from the green party because "it is electioncampagne time" and as the MEP has planned to meet politicians, NGO's and visit among others Anna Politkovskajas grave it would according to the russian administration "not be appropriate" to do so. seriously...

The minister of agricilture Sirkka-Liisa Anttila has met with both farmers and the swedish minister of agriculture. The Sweeds seem to be upet for that we subsidise our agriculture, as it gives the products from Finland a different starting point than the swedish products (and from other countries as well...). I agree that it is problematic! But on the other hand it's also necessary to keep at least some of the agriculture in this country -but how could we make it more efficient and economically more profitable without the subsidies? We have had 12 years of the same discussion, but haven't come to any conclusion yet.

I would really like to have an honest and open discussion on what we should be doing with our agriculture! We're just upset and worried about the developement all the time - both sugar production and everything else. Everybody are just protecting and trying to save what is possible to save. I'm tired of just trying to keep the subisides as high as possible. We should be concentrating on how develope the countryside, agriculture and the farmers work in a way that suits our nature and climate. So let's stop just saying no and try to find other solutions!

Hey Minna,

Why is it necessary "to keep at least some agriculture in this country"? Is it a cultural thing, or more a geopolitical consideration?

Just curious :).

well Bart, there are several reasons. Both cutural and geopoltical. But I would like our farmes to consider other kinds of corps that actually would be more efficient...
